FROM ST ANNS TO BELMONT:
‘LA FANTASIE’ ART PROJECT OPENS FOR ONE DAY ONLY

The La Fantasie project reopens to the general public for one day only on Saturday the 9th of February between 7pm and 11pm.

This large scale installation equipped with video projections, sculptural, painting and drawing elements, is situated at 41-43 Norfolk Street in Belmont, Port of Spain.

The exterior to the installation is a quaint colonial style house structure with windows, fretwork and a small garden. Before entering the ‘house,’ you are handed a small uv flashlight and a word of caution to please watch your step.

La Fantasie first opened from the 25th to the 27th of January 2008, and the artists have on request, decided to reopen for one more night. This project was designed over one year ago by a collaborative of young contemporary, local artists, who reside and work in Trinidad. Marlon Griffith, Jaime Lee Loy, and Nikolai Noel participated in GALVANIZE in 2006, a contemporary arts programme hosted by Caribbean Contemporary Arts. With the support of ‘The Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development’, ‘The Alice Yard Space’, and ‘Undercover Nurseries Limited’, the collaborative presents an interactive space that fuels conversations around the social, the political, and the psychological rooted in the domestic domain. There are underlying engagements with domesticity, settlement, abuse, and violence.

It was hoped that by the time the project was executed, Trinidad would have taken considerable steps away from the social reality of one year ago. The project therefore, would have been more of a reflection on an altered circumstance, rather than a current observation of an unresolved and continuing crisis. The project however is as relevant today as it was one year ago.

Location:
41 – 43 Norfolk Street Belmont. Turn onto Jerningham Avenue from the Savannah and continue straight. Turn left onto Norfolk Street by the first traffic light. When on Norfolk street cross one traffic light. La Fantasie is the fourth building on the left opposite the PNM constituency office.

The Collaborative can be contacted at thecollaborativefrog@gmail.com, thecollaborativefrog.blogspot.com, and at 868 771 4113.
